05/27/12 - Devil's Racecourse - ≈1,001 miles
One thousand miles. Wow. We are now also in West Virginia. Tomorrow Harper's Ferry. Got off the trail today to stop at a restaurant 0.3 miles away. Guide book says open daily. Apparently daily doesn't include Sundays. This was a major morale disappointment for both of us. Tonight we set up just before dark and just as a thunderstorm opened up on us. Really windy/stormy. Going to try for an EARLY start tomorrow. We can do it.

Day 33
04/02/12 - just outside Erwin - 341.1 miles
Windy, windy morning. Poured on us as soon as we put away our tents. More Trail Magic from CrankDaddy... beer and chips at 10:45am. Lunch at shelter, then hiked 'til it started pouring on us again. Every time there are thunderstorms, somehow we end up on the tops of mountains exposed. Praying the whole time. We finally just crouched under some trees while the thunder and lightning cracked and the rain and hail pelted us. Always trusting in our Protector. Eventually began to let up. Town tomorrow. Hoping it all works out with hotel stuff. Either way, date night and PIZZA HUT!!

Day 16
03/16/12 - Hogback Gap - 155.1 miles
This marks our sixth day in a row of trail magic. Coming down into Stecoah Gap about midway through our day, Anna and I were talking about how we both could go for a soda of some kind. A few minutes later... boom ...a box of colas is sitting on the trail with a bag of chocolate MoonPies to go along! We were so excited! We went down to the picnic tables where two other thru-hikers were finishing up and were about to enjoy when a man pulls up in his minivan. "You guys going all the way?" He was a thru-hiker in '04, and his name was Quest. He went back to the van and brought out DIET DR. PEPPER, Mountain Dew, Pepsi, peanuts, Snickers, Oreos and chocolate chip cookies! Unbelievable. Very nice guy. After that we headed on and began to race a thunderstorm. Praying the whole way and trusting that God is protecting us. We made it through the lightning. Thank you, Lord. Anna read Psalm 45 before bed.

Throughout the entire thru-hike, the one thing that seriously had me concerned for our safety was walking through these kinds of storms. Bears, ticks, snakes, people... you cannot fend off a storm.

ThunderAwakening
Woke up this morning to a thundering rainstorm.
I love that. Especially on days off.
I'm not sure what I'll be doing for these days off.
I think I may camp somewhere nearby, just so I can sleep outside in another potential downpour. It's refreshing to be outside during a rainstorm.
I'm reading a book right now called Three Hundred Zeroes: Lessons of the Heart on the Appalachian Trail. It's another refreshing read that's getting me excited for our thru hike in a couple months. Every day I think about it and am looking forward to probably the most challenging hike of my life.
Walking from Georgia to Maine.
I can hardly wait to begin that adventure.
A few months ago I posted this video someone had made of their thru hike. It's one of the best I've seen, and I challenge you to try and stop watching it once you press play.
