Bear

Tomorrow is July 4th.

Man, this summer has been flying by.  I realize I haven't posted in a while, but it feels like I've only been back at Rocky for a couple weeks.  It'll be September before I know it.

Yesterday I hiked up to Sandbeach Lake in Wild Basin for my backcountry patrol day.  Sandbeach will always have a special place in my heart.  It was the first trail I hiked in RMNP two years ago, and despite the lung crushing steady uphill to the lake, it remains one of my favorites.

As I was coming down from the lake (after dismantling FIVE illegal fire rings) I stopped in at the Hunter's Creek campsite to talk with the campers staying there.  They were four young guys from Louisiana on an epic National Park roadtrip to the west coast and back.  They were telling me about the bear tracks they spotted the day before and asking me what bear scat usually looks like.  I told them they'd be pretty lucky to see one of the park's few bears, and as long as they store their food properly, they shouldn't have anything to worry about.

"Alright, see you guys later!  Have a great trip."

30 seconds later I nearly walk into a black bear waiting just uphill from their campsite.

I managed to whip out my phone and snap a few shots and video before the curious bear sauntered off down the trail.

!

It's always so exciting to see a bear.  I immediately returned to the Louisiana campers and told them what I had just seen.

"Are you f***ing for real?!"  A mixture of excitement and worry in their voices.

I showed them the video and wished them well again, throwing in an extra reminder to secure their bear canisters.

Sandbeach Lake will always have a special place in my heart.

Day 110

06/18/12 - Gren Anderson Shelter - 1,319 miles

Saw our first Jersey bear today!  I was singing Pocahontas and when I finished, the bear was just staring at me.  We had a nice long look at the fuzzy guy.  Earlier that morning we came across some nice Trail Magic from a couple of previous thru-hikers.  Turkey sandwiches, chips, fruit, carrots, candy, cookies, beer & whiskey.  Nitrous Oxide and the Myakka Mules joined as well, and it was a nice gathering.  Town tomorrow!!

Day 86

05/25/12 - Jim & Molly Denton Shelter - 968.6 miles

Will there ever be a point when this Trail feels easy?  Everyday is a struggle for me.  Every mile is strenuous.  Every step aches.  We saw our second bear today just as we were about to exit SNP.  This one took off running before we could really get a good look, but still neat to see.  Anna's feet are really troubling her.  She is such a trooper though and an inspiration to me.  When I am really struggling, I try to imagine myself on top of Mount Katahdin.  This also inspires me.

Day 85

05/24/12 - Gravel Springs Hut - 950 miles

Bear yesterday.  Blackberry milkshake today.  Our Shenandoah experience is now complete.  Tomorrow we exit the park.  It was not nearly as easy as some made it out to be.  If anything, I think this has been one of our own personal most difficult sections.  I'm starting to smell like a wet dog.

Day 84

05/23/12 - Pass Mountain Hut - 936.9 miles

Our first BEAR!!  He was a little fuzzle guy right on the Trail.  Anna almost walked right by him.  I saw him and like usual, assumed he was a log/rock.  My heart skipped a beat when I saw his little head looking right at me.  I couldn't believe it.  There was a ranger guided walk going on that we had also starred in, so they came up after us and saw him, too.  A little bigger than a cub, but still pretty small.  Fuzzle bear!  Now I just need a blackberry milkshake and my Shenandoah experience will be complete.  Tomorrow = milkshake.  Also, walking on ridgelines in thunderstorms is no fun.  But what else is new?
